A recent report is explaining why the movie Tenet was only able to garner two Oscar nominations this year and it all boils down to director Christopher Nolan.
The big-budget movie was the first blockbuster film to be released in theaters during the COVID-19 pandemic and it unfortunately didn’t get audiences back into the seats.
Nolan insisted that the film be released in theaters instead of getting a VOD release like many of the other movies throughout the past year. He also criticized his home studio Warner Bros. when they later decided to put the entire 2021 slate on HBO Max the same day the films hit theaters.

Nolan reportedly asked Warner Bros. to use all of the money that was set aside for an awards campaign to extend the film’s theatrical release, according to IndieWire.
“Warners did not mail screeners to Academy members, did not plunk down $12,500 to upload the film on the Academy portal, placed no FYC ads, and mounted no digital screenings or Q&As,” the outlet reported.
Tenet received Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design, but when voters went to watch the movie on the screening portal, it was “unavailable.”
Now, Nolan has reportedly asked for the movie to be released on the Academy’s screening portal.
“While we actively chose not to campaign the film, at the filmmaker’s request, we will be supporting the nominations by putting the film on the AMPAS platform and passing members through the theaters,” a Warners source told IndieWire.
