The Color Purple is making a return to the big screen!
Oprah Winfrey is teaming up with Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones to bring the musical version of the story to theaters.
The trio will join Scott Sanders, the producer of The Color Purple‘s Broadway production, to adapt the award-winning musical.
“We’re really excited to create a film that translates the heart and emotion we found in telling this generational story on stage. This is an incredibly powerful drama that needs to be shared,” Scott told THR.
Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah starred in the original movie based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book and Cynthia Erivo starred in the Broadway production.
The story tells the tale of a black woman named Celie, who grows up in poverty and endures harsh treatment from her stepfather, husband and others in her life, which tests her faith in God and humankind.
